Happy New Year! We look forward to a busy and prosperous 2012.

The renovations and maintenance schedule at Colourfast are almost complete, and we invite you to visit our facility to take a look at all the work done over the holiday break. We turned the place inside out, fine-tuned all of our equipment, resurfaced all of our walls, floors, updated our lighting, and even restriped the floors. Not only does it look amazing, it is a sign that we are ready to roll in 2012!

A big shout out to all those on our team who came in during the break to tackle the maintenance program. The place looks amazing, thank you!

To all our friends, clients, and suppliers alike, best wishes for a great year ahead from the Management and Crew at Colourfast.

We at Colourfast rely on feedback from our clients. If we have recently completed a project for you, we would love to hear back from you. In most cases, metal parts and related components leave our facility and are destined for assembly and then shipped out to the end user. And although we do send out surveys to monitor customer satisfaction, we rarely hear back unless there is a problem in the field. Please send us your remarks, your suggestions, your praises and concerns. Send us your photos, and details of your experiences with our team members. We would love to hear what you think!

Years ago, it was “Value”. Value was replaced by “Quality”. When few could afford “Quality”, it became “Price”. With world economies in crisis mode, price is everything. It has become the determining factor in our decision-making when buying.

Today’s manufacturing conditions, and market trends are forcing us to continuously reinvent ourselves, to find new and better ways to bring the right combination of value, quality, at a competitive price to the fewer, ever-more selective, and highly demanding clients we have.

The most human and potentially refreshing quality which seems to be missing has become the fine and dying art of “Service”. Service is something I dearly miss in our society. To be able to phone and speak to a customer “service” representative who lives in our country is virtually a thing of the past. We are not referred to as Mr., or Mrs. Instead, we are an account number. In this day of advanced technology and systems, we make a phone call and follow the instructions of an automated customer service center. God forbid we make a mistake and press “2” instead of “3” and we have to start the process all over again. With all of this incredible technology and advanced systems, we spend hours waiting on the phone for service only to get off the phone frustrated and threatening to pull our account to a competitor. I hear it every day.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be called by name, by someone who’s first language is the same as yours? Wouldn’t it be nice to hear a real human voice when we call for customer service? Wouldn’t it be nice NOT to have to speak to a supervisor who “promises to get back to us within 48 hours” about a problem we have now?
I miss those days. I miss the days when the customer was always right. My only hope is that some of us refuse the notion that we are a better society with all of our advancements. I can only hope to instill in my family of employees the notion that without our client, we are nothing. They are the reason we can live comfortably, and for the time being, still sleep in a warm bed.

I believe in customer service. I believe it is important. I believe it makes a difference. I can only hope I am not alone in my belief.

Just when you think you have a handle on things and the markets are well on their way to recovery, a fresh dose of reality, a breaking news alert, an updated status of the state of the union from a country which ten years ago would never have impacted your own existence has the ability to change everything in seconds.

Today, our markets are directly affected by Greece’s inability to pay debt, Spain’s ongoing financial troubles, Italy’s economic instability and Germany’s negative outlook on 2013. Our oil prices are impacted by the instability in the Middle East, by Libya’s, and Syria’s internal uprisings.

What does this mean to our business, and to our way of life? It means added stress on both our personal and working lives. At work, it means more pressure to deliver on time, to be cheaper, to be better, to be consistently on the ball and living on the edge every moment of the working day. At home, it means additional financial stress, working harder for less money, it means not knowing whether our jobs are secure, and an increase in sleepless nights.

And yet as much as the media hypes our current situation as being as close to “doom and gloom” as is possible, this is an incredible time of opportunity.

What a great time to negotiate purchases of any kind; land in Florida, a new car, a new lease on a building, a new phone contract, or contract for wireless service. Prices across the board have never been cheaper. Although most people tend to hold on to their money in times of uncertainty, for those shrewd business types, now is the time to buy. Now is the time of opportunity.

These are interesting moments in our history. The decisions we make today can and will now more than ever lead us into new directions, take us to new destinations, provide for us new beginnings, and new hopes for our future.

We should not simply fear the instability in the current state of affairs. And as much as we should tread carefully and spend very wisely, the ones who seize these opportunities are the ones who will embrace the rewards five, ten, and twenty years down the road.

In the end, it is all about balance. It is about being in a place which is not so much focused simply on “winning”, or attaining the most toys. It is about being in a good place within. It’s about finding satisfaction at the end of each day confident that we did the right thing, and worked an honest day’s work. And by each end of each day, making the world a better place than it was that morning.
