What is old is new again. The trend towards natural, original, weathered or aged metal continues to thrive in the market place. The most “fashion forward” retail outlets are sticking to natural steel as the desired look, feel and vibe. Surrounded by broad sheets of vast & bare white walls, accented with rich woods to add warmth to an otherwise cold and abrupt natural feel of hot-rolled steel, flatbar, and plate, the blend of hot and cold are making for quite the forward design statement.

Once considered clean and “leading-edge” finishes, Metallics are now the cheap alternative to the richer feel of natural metal. The prim and proper effect obtained by otherwise very popular metallic finishes such as Satin Nickel, or the even richer Gun Metal are no longer in fashion, considered passé.

Inspired by the bold and ever-forward strength of steel, metal is no longer hidden, no longer made to mimic laminated wood, no longer disguised. Current trends dictate steel should look like steel, nothing less. And as easy as this may seem, it represents one of the biggest challenges finishers face, simply because there is no consistent look to natural steel. It changes from batch to batch, from mill to mill. And yet, each designer, every architect, or design studio has something ever so specific in mind. The canvas has never been bigger or broader…
