The Well is a 7.7-acre "urban village" in Toronto’s King West neighborhood that blends industrial heritage with futuristic architecture. Following a phased launch, it officially opened its commercial spaces in November 2023, with the central Wellington Market debuting in May 2024.
Key Design Features
The Glass Canopy: A 35,000-square-foot undulating glass roof protects the multi-level outdoor "Retail Walk," allowing for year-round shopping and dining in an open-air environment.
Deep Lake Cooling: Beneath the site lies a two-million-gallon water tank connected to Enwave’s sustainable cooling system, which uses lake water to provide low-carbon temperature control.
Reclaimed Materials: The design honors the site’s history by incorporating reclaimed Douglas fir "brick and beam" timber salvaged from the original buildings into the modern architecture.
Wellington Promenade: An 18-metre-wide, tree-lined pedestrian boulevard connects two historic city parks, creating a lush green gateway through the complex.
